Prepare to Be Transfixed by Dance Group Al Taw'am
National YoungArts Award recipient and the youngest two-time Minnesota Sage Cowles Award for dance recipient, Al Taw'am (Arabic for "The Twins") is fueled by Muslim identical twin sisters, Iman and Khadijah Siferllah-Griffin, who hail from Minneapolis. As dancers and choreographers for Brother Ali’s video Never Learn and Mona Haydar’s Hijabi, Iman and Khadijah have performed with world-renowned artist Black Violin, and in such events as The Nobel Peace Prize Forum, Facing Race, WE Day Minnesota and The Minnesota Secretary of State's 50th Voters’ Rights Act Anniversary Celebration. In 2016, the pair performed and provided a talk-back at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and in 2017, the pair were contestants on season one of World of Dance on NBC.
Al Taw'am are featured artists in the April 2019 event Art Is… My Origin. Art Is… My Origin is a sneak peek into the most sacred of creative spaces – home. This segment will explore those living-room, basement and bedroom practices of freedom that led to the discovery of voice. It will look at blackness across difference and art, specifically music and poetry, as an intergenerational connector and catalyst for liberation.
