Ilhan Omar gained a great deal of attention in the fall of 2018 for being one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. But what received less coverage was the fact that Omar is the first black African-born member ever in the U.S. House or Senate. Omar represents a wave of African voices elected in Minnesota to city, state and federal office. Tom Gitaa is the publisher of Mshale, a newspaper that serves Minnesota's African community. We recently talked to Tom about the growing influence of African voices.
